Description

Hops were grown in Massachusetts and other New England states to satisfy the European colonist’s desire for beer. Everything changed when downy mildew and a host of other East coast plant diseases attacked. Farmers relocated their crops further and further west, first in the Ohio river valleys then across the plains to the much less humid Pacific Northwest. Modern pest management techniques are making hop growing a viable cottage industry in New England once again. One pioneer in this effort are the LÂ’Etoile of Four Star Farms in Northfield, MA. They have been working for years with the University of Vermont’s Extension System Department of Plant and Soil Science to refine techniques to bring regular hop production back to its traditional home.

Usage is the same as for the Pacific Northwest-grown Cascade. It is a great dual use bittering and aromatic hop. The alpha acid content tends to be a bit higher and the aromatics have a bit more of a fruit punch character to accompany the classic pine aromas.
